Barnes & Noble opened a store in Merrymeeting Plaza, at 147 Bath Road in Brunswick. It's the bookstore chain's first opening in Maine since 1995, when it opened its Augusta store. Today, Augusta and Brunswick are the New York-based chain's only Maine locations. Unionized workers at Sappi paper mill in Westbrook have approved a new contract that will give them a 3% raise plus a $3,800 sign-on bonus. Members of United Steelworkers Local 1069 voted on July 11 to accept the agreement. The union represents 100 workers at the Sappi Westbrook mill. Allagash Brewing Co. has boosted its B Corp score the second time around. Maine's largest brewer said it earned an overall impact score of 104.0 in its recertification, more than 20 points above its initial 83.8 score in 2019. Thomas College in Waterville an- nounced the release of its new visual identity, including updates to the in- stitutional logo, Presidential seal and colors pallets. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in Augusta final- ized a purchase of over 700 acres in the town of Rangeley, creating a wild- life management area that features over 600 acres of prime deer wintering habitat, and shore frontage on Ross Pond, which contains a wild, self-sus- taining brook trout fishery. The Maine Department of Education provided an additional $2 million to 17 school units to expand sum- mer learning programs across the state for nearly 1,000 students. The programs focus on helping students recover from the impacts of the pan- demic through additional math and literacy instruction, tutoring, hands- on outdoor learning experiences, and family engagement activities. New Dimensions Federal Credit Union in Winslow said its 9th Annual Cruisin' for a Cure Car Show at the Waterville Lafleur Airport, combined with a $5,000 Miracle Match from the CO-OP Financial Services organization for credit unions, resulted in a $20,966 dona- tion to the Maine Children's Cancer Program, an affiliate of the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center. Franklin Community Health Network in Farmington said its an- nual Health Care Golf Classic raised a total of $26,000 for the Healthy Community Coalition of Greater Franklin County and the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Islesboro-based Pendleton Yacht Yard teamed up with the Rockland- based Island Institute to show the features of the e-boat, appropriately named Take Charge. Take Charge is powered by a 40-horsepower Flux Marine electric outboard, and charged with solar power. While the boat is in use, data will be gathered using a "baseline usage device" to help in- form improvements in future electric boat hull design. The boatyard uses the boat for service calls, moving marine equipment and materials and other duties. The Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth said its Frances Hollis Brain Foundation Fund awarded a total of $198,213 to 29 organizations that sup- port underserved or vulnerable com- munities in Auburn, Bath, Biddeford, Brunswick, Greater Portland, Lewiston, Saco and Sanford.
