22 Worcester Business Journal | March 20, 2023 | wbjournal.com T he vision to be a dynamic downtown destination where all people can experience the transformative power of the performing arts began with the founders of e Hanover eatre for the Performing Arts (THT). Aer a $32 million renovation, THT received immediate recognition, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation Excellence Award in 2010, and continues to be a catalyst for the economic growth of downtown Worcester. Overall ticket sales from Broadway tours, concerts and other performances consistently place THT in Pollstar's top theatre venues worldwide. e professional productions of A Christmas Carol and e Nutcracker, as well as diverse offerings, provide ample opportunities for community engagement and corporate partnerships, while educational and youth programs provide quality access to the performing arts for students, the public and underserved populations. In 2015, Worcester Center for Performing Arts (WCPA), the nonprofit organization that runs and operates THT, acquired and renovated 551 Main Street, providing space for a conservatory and education division which continues to grow. With its deep commitment to making arts accessible for public school students in Worcester and the surrounding area, programming and classes are available in theatre, dance, music, and design. e same year, the organization fully developed and embraced a new strategic plan focusing on inclusivity and excellence, sustainability, engagement and building a vibrant, inviting theatre district in downtown Worcester. THT aims to be a destination where all feel invited, welcomed, and valued. In July 2020, still reeling from the aermath of a complete shutdown due to the pandemic, e Hanover eatre and Conservatory pivoted to virtual student matinees and online conservatory classes for its more than 16,000 students; the overwhelmingly positive response underscored the vital role THT plays in making the arts accessible to young people. e Hanover eatre Repertory (THT Rep), the organization's newest initiative, is celebrating its first full season of dramatic plays in the BrickBox eater at the Jean McDonough Art Center (JMAC). THT Rep makes professional theatre in Worcester, for Worcester, entertaining audiences with fresh takes on classic, modern classic and classics-inspired works. THT has several events planned for its 15th anniversary season, including a Plaza Party on Saturday, June 3, at the renovated Francis R. Carroll Plaza with the new Bank of America Stage. FREE and open to the public, the party will feature live music by South Street Band, food trucks and more. We are grateful for the many key players and contributors that have supported our organization, as well as the dedication of our board of directors, staff, and volunteers over the last 15 years.
