UHart President Woodward to retire University of Hartford President Gregory Woodward. The University of Hartford announced that President Gregory Woodward plans to retire this summer, effective June 30. Woodward's six-year tenure at the university was marked by both accomplishments and controversy. During his time at the West Hartford-based private university, Woodward, 68, oversaw the creation of the 60,000-square-foot Francis X. and Nancy Hursey Center for Advanced Engineering and Health Professions. The center was part of a $58-million investment that included renovations to two existing academic spaces and increased classroom space for general education courses. In addition, Woodward oversaw the launch of 16 new undergraduate and graduate academic programs including nursing, aerospace, engineering, data science, and digital media and journalism. Woodward, however, faced public backlash in 2021, when the university's Board of Regents voted to transition the school's athletics program from NCAA Division I to Division III. It even led to a student-backed lawsuit claiming UHart "reneged on its commitment" to student-athletes. Woodward said the move was a necessary cost-cutting measure that would help the school provide more "wellness and recreation programming for all students." West Hartford UConn campus developer plans 'neighborhood village' A rendering of the design plans for the former UConn campus in West Hartford. The buyers of the former University of Connecticut branch campus in West Hartford are planning a mixed-use, "neighborhood village" including 492 apartments on the 57-acre property. The campus property sits on the northern side of Asylum Avenue, divided by Trout Brook Drive. A design concept recently submitted by developer West Hartford 1 to West Hartford's Design Review Advisory Committee places eight structures on 33.5 acres to the west of Trout Brook Drive, where the academic buildings currently sit. These buildings include a grocery store, parking garage, medical office building, spa and four, three-story buildings mixing 100 apartments with first-floor retail space. The 23.8 acres on the eastern side of Trout Brook Drive currently host parking lots and sports fields. Here, the developer would place five, five- story residential buildings with 392 apartments. Mass. startup accelerator to launch CT services; eyes Hartford presence A Massachusetts-based nonprofit startup accelerator is launching services in Connecticut and has plans to open a Hartford office, Gov. Ned Lamont announced. FORGE, which helps connect startups creating physical products with product development, manufacturing, and supply chain resources, is establishing operations in Connecticut and will offer its services free of charge to local startups, Lamont said. The organization plans to open an office in Hartford as a base of operations but hasn't yet identified a location, Lamont's office said. Mott Corp. to open 65K-square- foot facility in Farmington Advanced manufacturer Mott Corp. said it plans to open a new 65,000-square-foot facility near its Farmington headquarters that will double production capacity for its custom-designed engineering business. Mott will invest tens of millions of dollars in the expansion and add about 100 new jobs, the company said. Mott produces filtration systems used in the aerospace, clean energy and electric vehicle industries. The facility is expected to open during the first quarter of next year. It will be at 1690 New Britain Ave., just down the street from the company's headquarters on Spring Lane. The expansion will allow Mott to manufacture Porous Transport Layers – which allow for efficient and cost-effective production of hydrogen – at a larger scale.
