USM gets boost from noted alum Actor Tony Shalhoub has been named honorary chair of the fundraising cam- paign for the University of Southern Maine Center for the Arts to be built on the school's Portland campus, in what the university president called "an extraordinary new home for music and arts at USM." Shalhoub, a member of the USM Class of 1977, announced a $500,000 matching challenge by the Crewe Foundation. For every $2 raised, the foundation will make a $1 match. Now in its third and final year, USM's Great University Campaign has raised $44.5 million to date and expects to exceed its $46 million goal in the largest fundraiser in USM history. In 2021, the Crewe Foundation donated $5 million to build the arts center at USM. Projects include Windham Wastewater Treatment Facility, $2 million; Vulnerability Assessment of the Presumpscot River Corridor in Westbrook, $996,000; and a Feasibility Study for Water and Wastewater Systems in Gorham, $240,000. Southern Maine Community College in South Portland announced that it will receive $1.75 million in federal funding to help train Maine's workforce in the Electric Vehicle Repair and Controlled Environment Agriculture industries. MaineHealth announced that Cindy and Cuyler Morris, along with Cindy's father, Paul Baszucki, pledged $300,000 to the organization to support additional faculty for training nurses through the Maine Community College System. New England Cancer Specialists in Scarborough said it will be adding radi- ation oncology services at its new flag- ship Rock Row location in Westbrook. CEI Capital Management LLC in Brunswick made a $60,000 donation to the Oasis Free Clinics to help provide health, dental, mental health and pre- scription assistance for adults with low- incomes and no insurance between 18 and 64 who live in Freeport, Brunswick, Harpswell, the Islands, Durham and Sagadahoc County. TD Bank announced that Valo, a non- profit teenager retreat in Yarmouth, has been selected as the beneficiary of the 25th running of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth. Somerset Mill to get upgrade Sappi's Somerset paper manufactur- ing facility in Skowhegan is rebuilding its paper machine two (PM2), which will increase its capacity from 240,000 to 470,000 tons per year. PM2 will be rebuilt by Valmet Oyj using advanced manufacturing technology, produc- ing various packaging and coated paper products. e rebuilt machine is scheduled to start up in mid-2025. e rebuild will also include modifications and new parts to meet the requirements of the new packaging. e paper mill will receive Valmet industrial internet and automation solutions, including a new quality measurement system, a process control system, web monitoring and web inspection systems. Solar power for schools A $15.2 million investment by the U.S. Department of Agriculture will help fund a first-in-Maine solar project in Livermore Falls that will provide solar energy to offset power needs at five public schools. e 14,040-panel array is expected to produce 6,478,200 kilo- watt hours annually at Souther Farms in the Androscoggin County town. e project is a partnership between ReVision Energy of Montville and Aligned Climate Capital, a New York City investment firm. e proj- ect will provide power to Camden Rockport School District, Camden Hills Regional High School, Mt. Blue Regional School District, Regional School Unit 73 and Hope Elementary School. e remaining 4% will benefit the Farmington Water District.
