BUSINESS PROFILES | NOVEMBER 2022 | NEW HAVEN BIZ 14 T he Workers' Compensation Trust was founded in 1981 to offer a cost-effective alternative to the traditional insurance market. Headquartered in Wallingford, the company provides workers' compensation insurance and related services to Connecticut's health care and human service employers in a unique way, says President and CEO Diane M. Ritucci. "Because we are an employer mutual association, our policyholders are actually the shareholders of our company, so profits are returned to the members of the Trust. In addition, we provide a multitude of value- added services as part of your annual premium with the Trust." To date, the Trust has given back more than $58 million to its members. The value-added services include a professional, experienced loss control consultant – assigned to every member – who provides personalized guidance and expertise. Plus, Ritucci says, "We provide education and training on-site for our members to keep their staff aware of best safety practices. Members are also offered a vast array of free, in-person educational programs throughout the year in our Wallingford office. Topics not only deal with injury prevention, safety, OSHA mandates, etc., but also issues like how to be a good supervisor, unemployment compensation, the Family and Medical Leave Act, Connecticut paid leave, etc. These are all issues that help support a strong, healthy, safe and happy workplace and that is what we are all about." In the past five years, the Trust's Safety Grant Program has disbursed over $1.8 million, reducing both injuries and costs. Workers' Compensation Trust has always invested heavily in an infrastructure that prioritizes extensive loss prevention services, access to quality medical care and experienced, professional claims services, all aimed at ensuring that each member has the tools to prevent injuries and/or minimize their cost, "while providing a good experience for the injured worker," Ritucci says. "We are now the third-largest writer of workers' compensation in the state of Connecticut, due to our high business retention level and our strong reputation in the marketplace," she says. The past few years "have been more than challenging for much of our membership," Ritucci adds, as they were on the front lines taking care of Covid patients or clients while trying to maintain a healthy workforce and proper staffing. "Many of them had to close programs, rearrange activities, consolidate schedules, but they still fulfilled their ultimate responsibility for those under their care. We at the Trust are always humbled by the work of our members and their dedication to serve those in need." She says the biggest challenge going forward "will be continuing to be relevant to the membership in a way that provides exceptional value for the price. There are those who view an insurance policy as a year-by-year transaction, and, in some cases, it is, but a workers' compensation insurance policy can be so much more." "We seek members who understand the value of the services we offer and the positive impact those services will have on their workforce, their organization and their financials … well into the future."
