24 HARTFORDBUSINESS.COM | NOVEMBER 21, 2022 HEALTHCARE HEROES AWARDS 2022 T urkessa Antrum is chief human resources officer/chief DE&I officer at CHR. She serves as the strategic HR executive and leads HR, employee and labor relations, benefits, talent acquisition, HRIS, training, payroll and DE&I. With 26 years of HR experience, Antrum is currently president of the HR Association of Central Connecticut and an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford. What have been your significant contribu- tions to your organization in the past year? As CHR's first chief DE&I officer, a significant amount of time was spent over the last year to launch our DE&I efforts and ensure that employees understand and believe in our organization's commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment. This effort included surveying our work- force, holding focus groups and conducting interviews. In addition, we held 21 interac- tive sessions that I helped to coordinate, including four leadership trainings with managers and 17 community conversations with all staff on a variety of DE&I topics to help foster understanding and practice strat- egies for creating more inclusive spaces. Tell us about a challenge in your job that you were able to overcome. As turnover trends for industries like CHR remain well over 50%, under my leadership, we were successful at ending the year with a 22% voluntary turnover rate. Although CHR felt the impact of the Great Resignation, we improved retention through a thoughtful plan to connect more regularly with new hires. Fun Fact: I spent eight years serving in the Army Reserves. S ince 2013, Stephanie Marquez has held administrative healthcare roles in telemetry, intensive care, hematology & oncology, and developmental pediatrics for Hartford HealthCare, Manchester Memorial Hospital and Connecticut Children's, where she currently works as administrative staff. Marquez currently studies healthcare administration at Goodwin University, where she expects to graduate in May 2023. What have been your significant contribu- tions to your organization in the past year? In every healthcare setting that I've worked, I've sought to build a reputation among my colleagues of integrity, organization and empathy. I feel personally responsible for setting the tone for my teams and try to push all of us to intentionally and actively cultivate transparency, communication and efficiency so that we may best serve our patients. For instance, in my current role with Connecticut Children's, I have successfully advocated for a new standard of accessibility for patients by adding translated resources for multilingual families and increasing accommodations for patients struggling to comply with our virtual services. Tell us about a challenge in your job that you were able to overcome. Upon joining our clinic, I realized that we were providing interpretation for bilingual parents during their visit, but not for important written communications such as instructions on using our virtual software or appointment changes and reminders. I immediately sought the necessary resources to correct this, so that all our families can receive the same level of care.
