Waters invests $5.8M to grow Ireland R&D center Waters Corp., an analytical laboratory instrument company based in Milford, has invested $5.8 million in expanding its research and development center in Wexford, Ireland, to expand its mass spectrometry technology. e expansion is set to be complete in 2024 and include the expansion of scientific jobs at the site, although Waters didn't disclose how many new jobs would be added. e R&D center, which has been in operation for 25 years, currently employs about 400 people. e investment, which was announced as €6 million in euros, is part of Waters' strategic mission started in 2021 to evaluate the potential of its mass spectrometry technologies for broader uses in early disease detection, such as cancer screening. B R I E FS WuXi quintuples Worcester investment to $300M Chinese life sciences firm WuXi Biologics has increased the value of its investment in its Worcester facility from the original $60 million to now $300 million. WuXi held a topping off ceremony for the new facility on Sept. 27, as it reached the completion of the steel erection of its new commercial biomanufacturing facility, scheduled to open in 2024. With the increased investment, the originally planned 107,000-square- foot clinical biomanufacturing suite announced in 2019 will now be a 189,500-square-foot facility. e WuXi Worcester facility inside e Reactory biomanufacturing campus will employ 250 workers. WuXi is a global contract research, development and manufacturing organization that partners with other companies to help them produce and manufacture products. Plans for what kinds of products will be made at the new facility have not been announced yet. Indiana manufacturer moves into Auburn building after $4.8M sale A 46,000-square-foot industrial building along Route 20 in Auburn, sold in March for $4.8 million, has been leased to Indiana manufacturer OTECH Corp., according to Kelleher & Sadowsky Associates of Worcester, which brokered the lease and the sale. OTECH, founded in 1999, develops, designs, and custom manufactures high-quality specialty PVC compounds, thermoplastic elastomers and alloys used in electrical wire and cable, footwear, housewares, roofing, agricultural parts, and automotive industries, according to an Oct. 3 press release from Kelleher & Sadowsky. e company operates a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and a 120,000-square-foot warehouse in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. e company has been seeking a location in Massachusetts as part of a long-term expansion plan and intends to hire 25-30 employees at the new location, according to Kelleher & Sadowsky, t e building was bought in March by investor Henry Kenary from Webster- based RS Holdings, Inc. which purchased the property in 2002 for $2.6 million. e president of RS Holdings is Richard Shea, according to incorporation filings with the Mass. Working man Roy Byron (1877-1974) was one of the first auto mechanics in Worcester. He began his career as an automobile salesman but by 1914 operated Byron Motor Car Co., a service garage located behind his parents' house at 90 Lo- cust Ave. Later, in his 60s, he worked for Pontiac and Packard dealers. Roy was the youngest of two children born to Lewis and Ida Moulton Byron, a Brookfield couple who settled in Worcester aer marriage. Roy's father Lew- is worked as a shoe factory operative. At 41, Roy married and soon became the father of a daughter they named Hope. Aer Lewis Byron's death in 1923, Roy, whose tool kit is pictured here, became head of household at 90 Locust Ave. e1930 census indicates the house, worth $5,000, was owned free and clear, and the family enjoyed the pleasures of a radio set, a fairly new novelty.
