38 HARTFORDBUSINESS.COM | October 10, 2022 have major ram- ifications on the company's future. Walgreens Boots Al- liance Inc., parent to Walgreens pharma- cy, recently bought a controlling stake in CareCentrix, a healthcare technology company focused on post-acute and home care that received $24 million under former Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's "First Five" program. CareCentrix, founded in 1996, uses advanced analytics and technology to coordinate at-home care for about 19 million patients. It coordinates care on behalf of health insurers and health sys- tems, and has a network of companies that provide nursing, social work and other services. According to Walgreens, CareCentrix has reduced total cost of care for members by 20%, including a reduction of more than 11% in emergency depart- ment use and a 23% reduction in skilled nursing costs. Driscoll, who has an MBA from Har- vard, recently said the new Walgreens connection will allow his company to add prescription management to the home-care services it manages. The state and city of Hartford have staked a great deal of hope in CareCentrix. The company last decade received $24 million in grants from the state, in exchange for moving its headquarters from East Hartford to Hartford and agreeing to retain 213 jobs and create another 290 by the end of 2017. Today, CareCentrix said it has 1,877 employees nationally, 346 of whom live in Connecticut. CareCentrix currently leases 73,941 square feet in the Stilts Building, at 20 Church St. in downtown Hartford, but the company has been an eager adopter of the work-from-home model. While it will continue to grow its employee rolls in Connecticut and elsewhere, the amount of square footage it occupies in the Stilts Building and at other locations is probably going to shrink, Driscoll acknowledged. "We are continuing to review our plan, but with a conscious bias toward work from home," said Driscoll, noting remote work allows the company to hire talent from across the country. "We will keep office space in our key locations like Hartford and Stamford, but I trust they will be smaller." KIMBERLY MARTONE The Office of Health Strategy is a relatively new state agency, but it wields significant influence in overseeing Con- necticut's healthcare industry, including hospital mergers and healthcare costs. Kimberly Martone in July was named OHS' interim director by Gov. Ned Lamont, replacing Victoria Veltri. She inherited a full plate. Recently, OHS has overseen several controversial deals, including a Massa- chusetts-based Catholic health system's bid to acquire Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, and Hartford HealthCare's ef- forts to close the labor and delivery unit at Windham Hospital. Earlier this year OHS also denied the opening of a proton therapy cancer treat- ment center in Danbury, while approving one in Wallingford to be jointly operated by Hartford HealthCare and Yale New Haven Health. Martone was previously the deputy director and chief of staff for the Office of Health Strategy, where she worked under the leadership of Veltri since the agency was created in 2018. In these dual roles, she has been responsible for overseeing the agency's 40 staff members, as well as its business and legal functions. Prior to joining the Office of Health Strategy, Martone worked from 2009 to 2018 for the Connecticut Department of Public Health as the director of operations in the Office of Health Care Access – an office that was merged into the Office of Health Strategy. Martone earned a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration business from Providence College, and a mas- ter's degree in healthcare management from Quinnipiac College. DR.
