THE JACKSON LABORATORY DISCOVERY STARTS HERE 2021: Your support at work in Maine RESEARCH • Catherine Kaczorowski, Ph.D., was awarded major NIH grant to study the genetics of sleep disturbance in dementia. • Cat Lutz, Ph.D., was named vice president of JAX's newly established Rare Disease Translational Center. • Ryan Tewhey, Ph.D., and his lab sequenced more than 20,000 COVID variants in partnership with Maine CDC. COMMUNITY • JAX's Volunteer Time Off program gives each employee 16 hours of paid time off to provide service to other nonprofits. • Community Contributions program supports local nonprofits, including libraries, health-care organizations and food pantries. • JAX supported large and small Maine businesses with more than $42 million in local spending. EDUCATION • High school research projects in equine health, AI and sensors were awarded top prizes at Maine State Science Fair. • Seven hundred Maine students completed a genomics lesson through Teaching the Genome Generation. • JAX celebrated the fifth year of its College Scholarship Program for 1 st -generation college students.
