Paul Lavoie, who started the job in February, says he is focused on helping the state's manufacturers — big and small — by addressing the myriad challenges they are facing. Lavoie's background in manufacturing includes working at ETTER Engineering Co. in Bristol and Cromwell-based Carey Manufacturing. In his new role, he spends his time promoting growth in the manufacturing sector and helping companies make important connections. Our Q&A feature this month is with Lavoie, who chatted with New Haven Biz about what he has heard from the indus- try to date, and what the future holds for the state's manufac- turers. Workers at the Graduate New Haven hotel recently banned together to unionize with hopes of improving their working conditions. In late July, hotel workers joined with represen- tatives of the UNITE HERE! labor union to announce they had signed a three-year contract with the hotel. e National Labor Relations Board reports an uptick in union represen- tation petitions. Another feature in this issue spotlights this growing trend toward unionization and how employers are responding. Have you been struggling with how to cra your job listings since the legislature passed wage disclosure requirements last year? Several area labor and employment attorneys give their advice for how em- ployers can avoid violating the law. In another feature, we delve into how the state and region's population trends have prompted a growing demand for supermarkets that import Asian favorites. We also check-in with Stony Creek Brew- ery's new CEO Daniel Shannon, who will help the brewery grow beyond beer. We hope you enjoy the issue.
