wbjournal.com | August 22, 2022 | Worcester Business Journal 23 Throughout his 14 years at SEACMA, Newgate has been a beacon for Central Mass. youth. Newgate's family fled Vietnam in the 1980s, and he spent much of his childhood in refugee camps in Cambodia and Thai- land. After eventually moving to Lowell as a teenager, his family was forced to move again – to Worcester – when gang violence came too close to home. With this understanding of hardship and poverty, Newgate began volunteering at SEACMA and soon founded the Lion Dance program. The program, which trains young people in the Chinese-Vietnamese tradition of lion dancing, aims to keep kids away from gang activities and in school, all while improving mental and physical fitness. Newgate registered the Lion Dance team in competitions at colleges, inspiring more than 30 of the program participants to attend higher education at universities like Harvard, Yale, and Cornell. His second initiative, Youth Effect International, focuses on instilling a sense of pride and identity among young Asian Americans. In this program, he takes youth back to their former homes, villages, and refugee camps to provide aid for the people there. Newgate's leadership has directly helped keep more than 300 Southeast Asian youths away from gang violence. - K.H. What movie best encapsulates your personality? I don't think any movies best encapsulates my personality, but my favorite movie is "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". What Central Mass. restaurant should everyone try? Bar One & Sushi Restaurant, in Auburn What keys to business success do most people not know? Having mentors that inspire you. Most importantly, you have to build trust. It doesn't matter what degree or what title you have, if you don't build trust, you can't be successful. Outside of your career and family, what has been your marquee life experience? I am an adrenaline rush junkie. I love rock climbing, skydiving, and motorcycle racing. No stranger to multitasking, she co-founded a hydration business, ReFresh Me IV, while serving Nichols College as director of undergraduate adult education, partnerships, and competency-based education. While attending grad school, White was the nurse manager at Windham Hospital in Connecticut, managing a staff of more than 50 people and overseeing the daily operations of a 12-bed intensive care unit and a 23-bed medical-surgical and pediatric unit. During her time, the hospital saw increased satisfaction among patients and a jump in efficiency, with overtime dropping 25%. White still finds time to volunteer with the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District, where she has served on the Mason Road and Dudley Elementary School councils for the past five years, as well as coaching the cheerlead- ing squad. White finds time to volunteer as nurse for the Charlton Baptist Church bible school and fills in as school nurse, when needed, for Dudley-Charlton Public Schools. During the COVID pandemic, White could be found in full personal protective equip- ment, ensuring people were tested and immunized. White does not fear obstacles and sees life as a journey, a quality she hopes to pass on to her children. - T.D. Would you prefer to live on the equator or in Antarctica? Easy, Antarctica, it's one of the seven continents, and I need to hit all seven by 50. I will say I might move shortly after moving there; I like the heat! If you gave a keynote at a college graduation, what advice would you give? Find your cheerleader. To be successful, everyone needs a cheerleader. It may not be a parent or teacher; it could be a friend or even a stranger who you met and end up interacting with regularly.
