Each year, celebrated documentary filmmaker Ken Burns returns to honor an individual who has made a significant contribution to the preservation of history through the arts with the Ken Burns Lifetime Achievement Award. In September 2022 this award will be presented to Pulitzer Prize winner and bestselling author Jon Meacham. Similarly, the Joan M. McGrath Memorial Lecture brings distinguished speakers to Old Sturbridge Village, most recently welcoming Presidential historian Richard Norton Smith in April 2022. Other fundraising events, including galas and auctions, vary year-to- year. In June 2022 we celebrated the Village's 75th Anniversary with a successful Gala Under the Stars, and in November we will begin a new tradition with the first ever Harvest Gala to support Coggeshall Farm Museum. The volunteer program at Old Sturbridge Village plays a vital role in fulfilling the museum's mission to re-create and preserve the past for visitors. Over 100 Village volunteers collectively contribute thousands of service hours annually. Our volunteers fill many roles, from costumed greeters to office assistants. The OSV Dancers and Singers portray 'experienced dancers' or a 'singing school' from the town of Sturbridge. All of the dances and music performed is authentic for the period. Herb garden assistants help maintain the Village herb garden during the warmer months. Benefits for volunteers include free admission to the museum, educational opportunities, discounts, and more. FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES POST-PANDEMIC: One of the most important lessons we learned was to be ready to act quickly, but not hastily. We moved quickly to shut down operations at the outset of the pandemic, and then moved efficiently and thoughtfully to reopen to the public in July 2020—much earlier than most cultural organizations. We were able to open due to the creativity and nimbleness of our staff: we shifted our public engagement to outdoor spaces, developed new programs designed for social distancing, and adapted our programs as we received new public health guidance. "Old Sturbridge Village allows for a truly immersive experience into the past. You can walk from home to home, from craft to craft. You get to see skilled tradespeople, talk with knowledgeable historians, and do things at the Village. You get to be there in the past. What is uniquely special is that the Village allows for reflection of the hard work it took to make this country." – Bichop Nawrot, Chair As a Blue Star Museum, Old Sturbridge Village offers free admission to thousands of active-duty military, National Guard, reserve military, disabled veterans, and career-retired military members and their families. This program is supported by generous donations to the Field of Flags campaign. Each year a field of flags is planted outside the Visitor Center from Memorial Day through Labor Day in honor of our active-duty military and veterans. Old Sturbridge Village solicits support through appeals by mail four times per year. Donations are gratefully accepted year-round by mail, through our website, or as gifts of stock. Corporate sponsorship opportunities are also available year-round. The Village's corporate member program provides businesses an opportunity to support the museum while taking advantage of complimentary access to Old Sturbridge Village, public brand recognition at the museum, and networking opportunities. The corporate program is customizable to meet the needs of businesses of any size and provides the opportunity for sponsorship of fan- favorite programs such as 4th of July or exhibits within the museum.
