The 4,000-square-foot project will add a fitness and wellness center. It will include cardio and strength training equipment, weights and flexible space for yoga, medita- tion and mindfulness. It will also serve as a permanent home of the Edgar F. White Class of 1938 Athletic Hall of Fame. "We are thrilled to break ground on one of the most exciting projects in the history of our campus. This facility offers a new vision for athletics, fitness and wellness across NYA's entire student body," said Ben Jackson, head of school. Tim Hebert, who leads the construction firm, is also a North Yarmouth Academy parent. The target completion date for the arena, fitness and wellness project is summer 2023. To ensure ice time remains available for periods during construction to both NYA and community hockey teams, construction will be completed in phases. North Yarmouth Academy was founded in 1814, before Maine became a state. At the time, Yarmouth was known as North Yarmouth because it was part of Massachusetts, which already had a Yarmouth on Cape Cod. It has an enrollment of 375. Travis Roy, who was in the class of 1994, played hockey at NYA and then went on to play at Boston University, where he suffered a spinal cord injury in his first game. He died in October 2021, at age 45, from complications of being a quad- riplegic for 25 years, his family said at the time. The expansion received major fundraising help from trustee Frederique Daniel and Dr. Jarrod Daniel, NYA parents, of $4 million, the largest gift in the academy's history. It also received support from Lori and Chris Poulin, NYA parents; Steve Malcom and Martha Barrett, NYA alumni parents; and a grant from the Welch Family Foundation.
