18 HARTFORD BUSINESS JOURNAL | APRIL 25, 2022 | BUSINESS PROFILES W hen Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket wanted a world-class karting experience, they turned to On Track Karting. The family-owned business delivered Monza World Class Karting, named after the host city of the Italian Grand Prix, with a multi-level track engineered and fabricated in Italy. Since it opened in 2018, the facility has continued to improve. A bar opened in 2020. A kitchen opened in 2021. And in January 2022, Monza introduced a brand-new fleet of electric karts, which offer better speed control, a more stable ride, less noise and no fumes, plus a reverse feature that allows customers to get going on their own after a spin or collision. Monza's track is open year-round and is an exciting option for any company or group looking for a unique team-building experience or some competitive fun. "With many people now working from home, group outings are more valuable than ever," says Marty Tyrrel, who co-founded On Track Karting in 2006 with his brother, Chris, and their parents, Biff and Barbara. Chris, who was working as an airline pilot, had always dreamed of being a racecar driver while Marty was working for a Fortune 500 company. They opened their first track in Wallingford and added a second in western Connecticut in 2012. While initially focused on the best karting experience, the Tyrrels steadily added amenities, particularly in the areas of food, beverage and entertainment. Foxwoods approached them in 2016 as part of an exhaustive search for a karting operator. Compared to the competition, Monza World Class Karting offers a longer, wider and faster track for a true racing experience. Moreover, the new electric karts give drivers a choice of speed. MILD sessions are for younger drivers and those nervous to try it, while WILD sessions are for those excited to go fast. "This feature alone has significantly increased the participation rate of guests in large group outings," Marty Tyrrel says. "I would estimate we have gone from 80% participation to almost 95% participation, and our MILD setting is still faster than most indoor tracks." Monza continues to offer gas-powered karts for leagues and other competitions, as well as on request for private events. For after the racing, Monza serves up an assortment of ready-to-drink cocktails, traditional bar food and UNO Express© products, including Chicago Thin Crust pizzas, classic deep dish pizzas and stuffed breads. "We are very excited to bring Uno's back to Connecticut," Tyrrel says. The venue plans to bring on additional amenities, including axe-throwing and upgraded seating in dining areas, to offer more value and more thrills to large groups. Monza is also planning to bring back its annual Special Olympics fundraiser, which was sidetracked by COVID-19. Special Olympics athletes serve as team captains and work to solve puzzles or complete challenges with every pit stop throughout the team endurance event.
