Butterfly's handheld ultrasound can empower midwives, study finds Guilford-based Butterfly Network's handheld device can be used to "democratize obstetric ultrasound," according to a new study announced by the company. e study, conducted from September 2018 through June 2021 and published in NEJM Evidence, involved 4,695 pregnant volunteers in North Carolina and Zambia. Researchers compared estimates of gestational age given by the Butterfly iQ handheld device against fetal measurements collected on commercial ultrasound machines. e study concluded that the handheld device could be used by local midwives and other health professionals in remote areas to obtain accurate results and improve health outcomes. e study was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Butterfly Network announced it planned to move this year to a new corporate headquarters in Burlington, Mass., but some workers are expected to remain in Guilford. NY firm to open new medical waste facility in West Haven New York-based MedXwaste has won approval for a new medical waste transfer station at 81 Farwell St. in West Haven, the company announced. e company said it worked with town and industry officials for two years to get the go-ahead for the new facility. e new transfer station will consolidate waste processing, localize service and boost energy savings, according to MedXwaste. It will also add a new wash system for reusable medical waste containers, reducing its carbon footprint by using less cardboard and non-reusable plastic. MedXwaste, based in Deer Park, N.Y., works with healthcare providers in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Illinois. Meriden women gets year in jail in $400K embezzlement Meriden resident Crystal Klatt was sentenced to a year and day in prison for embezzling more than $400,000 from clients of a Hamden property management firm, the U.S. Attorney's office said. U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall in New Haven in April handed down the sentence, which also includes three years of supervised release. Hall also ordered Klatt to pay full restitution. According to Klatt's LinkedIn profile, she was employed as an assistant property manager at Margolis Management and Realty LLC in Hamden, which provides property management services to condominium associations. Klatt had access to client bank accounts and diverted $446,859.82 from at least 14 clients to pay her personal credit card charges between approximately December 2014 and January 2021, according to court documents.
