These women have common threads woven throughout their stories of career perseverance, dedication, leadership and resourcefulness. Education is a foundation for their career knowledge and development. Many have found great challenges in managing their professional lives while raising children at the same time. The changing dynamics of the pandemic have carried extra weight for women in leadership roles, who are responsible for the welfare of others and the organizations they guide or work within. While each of this year's winners share common attributes, they also have unique, individual stories that shaped their lives. One woman's mentor, her father, brought their family from Jamaica in search of a better life, working full time while managing another business — modeling what a strong work ethic could accomplish. Another honoree moved to Connecticut at a key time in her career — and had to start over again, successfully building a professional network and reputation in a male-dominated field. Another honoree began her career in meteorology but mustered up the courage to go outside her comfort zone — with some financial risk as part of the deal — and now owns a successful retail specialty running company. In each of the past 20 years, Hartford Business Journal has honored the region's most talented women in leadership roles throughout central Connecticut. The winners are nominated by readers and chosen by a panel of independent judges. This year we'd like to thank our judges — Nancy J Wheeler (WheelerConnect), Shirar O'Connor (Advance CT) and Lauren Carmody (Connecticut Innovations) — for helping choose our winners. The honorees demonstrate business savvy, confidence in themselves and their organizations, and a strong track record of professional success. We will celebrate our honorees during an event May 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Farmington Gardens in Farmington. We hope you will join us.
