wbjournal.com | March 21, 2022 | Worcester Business Journal 5 Water Street 62-apartment complex opened Walker Los, a 62-unit apartment com- plex at the former Walker Shoe Factory in Worcester, opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 9. e redevelopment of the 150-year- old former factory was first announced in 2019 when Chelsea-based developer Anthony Rossi bought the property at 28 Water St. for $660,000. Rossi is also redeveloping buildings on Hermon Street to become zero-carbon housing complexes. e adapted buildings will include 57 units. All 62 units in the Walker Los com- plex are one-bedroom, market-rate studio apartments. e complex is located at the end of Water Street about two blocks from a proposed 415-unit high-rise on Franklin Street, which is awaiting City approval. Competing hardware stores In 1767, Stephen Salisbury opened a hardware store in Worcester's Lincoln Square. In 1782, Salisbury's cousin, Daniel Waldo, opened a competing hardware store a few blocks away on Main Street. Salisbury's store closed in 1813, but Waldo's store remained open for 250 years, changing hands multiple times. Aer Waldo, it was owned by Henry Miller, who then sold it in 1866 to a man who would rename the store aer himself. e store bore that name until it closed in 2017. n Trivia question: What was the name of Daniel Waldo's original hardware store when it closed in 2017?
