D
uring the pandemic,
our region's
healthcare workers
have had to call on
their reserves of
resiliency and resourcefulness.
On the front lines of caring for
those with the virus, they have
witnessed not only how it affects
patients, but patients' loved ones
as well.
They have delivered care
for a medical condition with
circumstances like we've never
seen before as a society — its
long-term effects still unknown
— all while providing other
ongoing medical services with
professionalism and striving
to meet their organization's
standards of quality care.
Ironically, they were working
to heal others while wondering
if they themselves could be
harmed. Donning personal
protective equipment to avoid
contracting COVID-19, following
Centers for Disease Control
guidelines, these workers put
their own health at risk, an
additional stressful aspect of
their jobs.
Broad-scope perspective
But Hartford Business Journal's
Health Care Heroes awards
aren't only a nod to the more
traditional physicians and nurses
directly delivering care.
We also recognize the
dedication and innovation of
other industry players, such
as those creating COVID-19
vaccination initiatives for the
uninsured or guiding research
foundations' invaluable
achievements.
Leaders in areas of mental
health, supply chain and
pharmacy education are other
examples of crucial, key players
that ultimately shape quality
health care for us all.
These Health Care Heroes
came to the attention of Hartford
Business Journal in perhaps the
most organic way possible: From
those who work alongside them,
or are impacted by their work.
More than mere names
plucked from headlines, the
business community and public
came forward to identify these
individuals to our editorial team,
which chose the winners.
Our hope is that you will find
inspiration in these pages as well
as newfound appreciation for
the expert medical talent here,
in our healthcare organizations,
universities, research facilities
and nonprofits.
We will be celebrating our
winners at a special event
Nov. 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 9
p.m. at Farmington Gardens in
Farmington. We hope you will join
us.
Remember, we look to
members of the community for
our Health Care Heroes, so it's
never too early to begin thinking
of nominations for next year.
