CONGRATULATIONS D r. Camelia Lawrence is a board- certified surgeon specializing in benign and malignant breast disease. She has fellowship training in advanced breast cancer surgery, including skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy and oncoplastic techniques. She is director of breast surgery for the Hospital of Central Connecticut and MidState Medical Center at Hartford HealthCare (HHC). Q: Why is she a HealthCare Hero? Dr. Lawrence has a unique ability to bond with her patients with care and attentiveness, going beyond the physical needs of the patient to their emotional well-being. She is also an unrelenting goodwill emissary of HHC through community involvement and representation. In a world which belongs to those who show up, Dr. Lawrence does so on a consistent basis. Q: How did you contribute to your organization's COVID-19 response? I fiercely advocated for continued prioritization of breast cancer screening and timely surgical intervention through direct patient care, public speaking engagements, TV interviews, articles and community presentations while underscoring the importance of COVID-19 vaccinations. I tried to lead by example, championing colleague and patient safety by adhering to best practices in safety. A s supply chain director, William J. Lee oversees procurement, contract management, value analysis, mail/ courier services, equipment express, patient transport, inventory management, warehousing and logistics. He is accountable for Connecticut Children's strategic cost containment plan. Additionally, Lee serves as a board member for the Capital City Education Alliance (CCEA). Q: Why is he a HealthCare Hero? Lee's passion for health care started when he became a pharmacy buyer in 2003 and he has never looked back. Not only does he embody a "patient-first" mindset, but he also inspires his supply chain team and other colleagues to match his commitment and passion. He is a tireless advocate for children's health and generously shares his expertise with his Children's Hospital Association colleagues across the nation. Lee also works very closely with CCEA to raise funds to support the hospital and the patients and families it serves. Q: How did you contribute to your organization's COVID-19 response? I am an essential member of the Connecticut Children's PPE Task Force and hospital emergency operations. I ensure that we have sufficient supplies and medical equipment to keep patients and clinicians safe throughout these unprecedented times. I played an active role as an incident commander leading the COVID-19 vaccine clinic for our team members, community, patients and families.
