Brown is the Dean and David W. Wallace Dean of the Yale School of Medicine and the C.N.H. Long professor of Internal Medicine. From 2010-2020, she served as chair of the Vanderbilt Department of Medicine and physician-in-chief of Vanderbilt University Hospital. A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Medical School, her research has focused on developing new pharmacological strategies to prevent vascular disease in patients with high blood pressure and diabetes. What have been your major accom- plishments in the last year? roughout my career, I have worked to promote the development of physician-scientists. At Vanderbilt, I established a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. As associate dean for Clinical and Translational Scientist Development, I was able to build institutional infrastructure to support physician-scientists in their transition to independence. is past year at Yale, we appointed the school's first associate dean for physician-scientist development, who has established an office to address the practical challenges to career development, create community and mentorship that spans all phases of training, ensure protected time and research support for physician- scientists and foster collaborations that drive future discoveries. What are your keys to maintaining business success? One is strategic planning that engages all stakeholders and articulates a common vision with a plan to achieve it. Another is accountability, in a culture that does not shame or blame but rather builds trust and transparency. A third is embracing discipline as a means to enhance, not inhibit, autonomy. Fun Fact: I am a Nashville Predators fan! n Mary Ellen Cody Chief Regional External Affairs Officer & Dean of Development and Community Partnerships Gateway Community College and the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. Education: George Washington University Highest degree: Bachelor of Arts, Political Communication M ary Ellen Cody joined Gateway in 2008 to help the college in its move to downtown New Haven. She managed the capital campaign, raised funds for the college and recruited foun- dation board members. She also served as interim dean of workforce at the college. Cody previously held public and pri- vate sector positions and received several prestigious awards. She was Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce's 2020 Vol- unteer of the Year. What has been your biggest profession- al accomplishment to date? What have been your major accomplishments in the last year? I'm very proud of having had a hand in bringing the Connecticut Public Radio and Television studio to Gateway Com- munity College's Church Street campus in 2017. It brought life-changing opportuni- ties for our Gateway students. In the last year, thanks to the tireless efforts of our foundation board and the great team in my department, we increased support for wraparound ser- vices for students during the pandemic. Gateway students live and work in this community, many in frontline jobs, especially in health care. With the strong support of our partners, technology scholarships grew by 1,000%, our Helping Hands support program provided more interventions than ever, and we established the Equity in Education Fund. What are your keys to maintaining business success? Listen to what is important to your partners and think creatively about how to achieve these goals. Be straight- forward in communication. A mentor taught me to pick up the phone and have a direct conversation, especially when it is a difficult topic. Value follow-through. And finally, never forget to say "thank you" for a job well done. Fun Fact: I was invited aboard the USS Spring- field submarine, and spent a full day under Long Island Sound. n Victoria "Vicky" Chun Thomas A. Beckett Director of Athlet- ics Yale University Education: Colgate University V ictoria "Vicky" Chun has been omas A. Beckett Director of Athletics at Yale University since 2018. Chun is the first woman and first Asian American to serve in this role at Yale, overseeing 35 varsity teams, over 50 club and intramural sports, as well as Yale athletic facilities. Recognized by Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal as a Game Changer, Chun has a reputation as one of the most innovative and widely respected leaders in NCAA Division I. What are your major accomplish- ments? My biggest accomplishments have included building a 34,800-square- foot, state-of-the-art facility with offices and locker rooms for men's and women's lacrosse and men's and women's soccer. In addition to team locker rooms and office spaces, the field house also includes support spaces for athletic medicine, hydrotherapy, strength and conditioning and equipment services. Yale was also ranked No. 1 in the NCAA graduation success rate. e school has also won many Ivy League championships and national titles. I am also proud of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives. What are your keys to maintaining business success? Maintaining success in business and life stems from hard work and building trusting relationships with everyone around you.
