She then finished her master's degree in international studies and worked as a job coach for adolescents in Hartford. In 2016 she was hired at IRIS as an early employment specialist during the Syrian surge. Szabo now leads a team that helps refugees find jobs and become self-sufficient. What's been your biggest professional accomplishment so far? What have been your major accomplishments in the last year? My biggest accomplishment has been that my life's purpose has aligned with my actual career. I am doing what I love and I love what I do. Every day I get up and am excited to start because I don't consider it work. In the last year, I have gone from being the only employment services specialist at IRIS to building a successful team of five that is expanding into Hartford, building a career development program that aims to help our clients not only get their first jobs, but to get better-paying jobs, and is gearing up to receive 200 to 300 Afghan evacuees, many whom will need jobs. What are your keys to maintaining business success? My keys to maintaining business success have simply been to love this mission of resettling immigrants and refugees, always keeping my word and truly caring about the people I serve each day. Fun Fact I was born in a refugee camp in Latina, Italy. n Margaret Anne Tockarshewsky Executive Director New Haven Museum Education: Cornell University Highest Degree: Graduate M argaret Anne Tockarshewsky has been the executive director of the New Haven Museum since 2012. Previously, at Queens Botanical Gar- den, she served as director of marketing and communications and as a consul- tant. Tockarshewsky began her career as a museum publicist for the Lehigh County Historical Society, e Hud- son River Museum and the Neuberger Museum. She holds a graduate degree in historic preservation from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in communication arts from Cornell University. What's been your biggest professional ac- complishment so far? What have been your major accomplishments in the last year? My biggest professional accom- plishment is making the New Haven Museum a more vibrant, relevant and inclusive place — better known than it was a decade ago — and continuing to center the community in its partner- ships, programs and planning. In the last year I have worked with staff and the community to pivot programming in response to rapidly changing community needs—providing a space for programming that is sup- portive and inclusive of all voices, partic- ularly those that have traditionally been underrepresented in the history commu- nity — and developing digital program- ming for a wider online community in response to the pandemic. What are your keys to maintaining business success? I pursue opportunities for professional development and stay open to new ideas and ways of thinking. I continuously strive to work collaboratively in the community to build exhibitions, pro- grams and outreach activities to engage new audiences and supporters.
