But the housing crunch has also had an impact on the number of building permits issued. Through the first five months of 2021, Maine is on pace to issue the highest number of building permits since 2007. At the current pace, there would be 6,468 building permits issued this year, which would be the highest level since 2006, during Maine's last building boom.
