Charmel started as a student intern and worked his way up the ranks to the top post just over two decades ago. He also serves as chair and CEO of Planetree Inc., a subsidiary corporation. The Planetree model, which emphasizes having a patient- centered, home-like atmosphere, rather than an institutional hospital setting, attracts healthcare leaders from around the world who want to incorporate it in their organizations. Charmel is also an author, who co- wrote the book, "Putting Patients First," which received the American College of Healthcare Executive's Health Care book of the year award in 2004. He has held several other leadership positions, including a three-year stint as a member of the National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality. He has had leadership roles with the Connecticut Hospital Association's board of directors and its board of diversified network services. Churchwell, a trailblazer as Yale New Haven Hospital's first Black president, says he plans to push for his healthcare institution to continue to be a place of "innovation and collaboration." Churchwell, who started in the role in October, was a natural fit, as he previously served as the hospital's chief operating officer and executive vice president. The nonprofit hospital has 1,541 beds and attracts patients from around the country and internationally. Yale New Haven Hospital also emcompasses Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, Yale New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. Churchwell first came to work at the hospital in 2015, and he is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease. Churchwell is a member of the national board of directors of the American Heart Association. According to Churchwell, a priority for him is to support the hospital's employees, so it is a place for them to grow and advance in their careers. Churchwell has focused on community outreach throughout his career. He has urged patients to come in for routine care, assuring the public that the hospital has been taking precautions to ensure safety during the pandemic. Churchwell is also known for going out to meet people, such as through his "Walk with a Doc" sessions in the Dixwell and Newhallville neighborhoods of New Haven. Marna Borgstrom, CEO, Yale New Haven Health As CEO of Yale New Haven Health, Marna Borgstrom manages the state's largest health system, one with $5 billion in revenue. e system includes Yale New Haven Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Lawrence+Memorial Hospital in New London and Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island. Borgstrom started at Yale New Haven Hospital roughly four decades ago, and rose to CEO in 2005. Since the coronavirus pandemic began, Borgstrom has led the hospitals as they have cared for thousands of critically- ill patients. She has worked to address the problem of non-COVID patients delaying care, and the negative financial impact of that avoidance. Borgstrom has led efforts for increased use of virtual doctor visits to make patients feel safer, calling telehealth an "incredibly useful alternative" for helping patients get the care they need sooner. Borgstrom has been working to ensure the health system meets demand for COVID-19 testing and vaccinations. In April, the health system announced it surpassed 1 million COVID-19 tests. e health system has given out as many as 50,000 vaccine doses in a single week. Borgstrom has also been involved in public outreach efforts to allay fears about vaccination and to keep the public apprised of the positive impact of vaccines in fighting the virus.
