This is frequently asked by patients as well as caregivers. The answer to this question is whenever a person is experiencing any problems with the urinary tract. This can range from difficulty with urination, waking up frequently at nighttime to urinate, or seeing blood in the urine. Urologists are specialists in all organs related to the urinary tract ranging from the kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate and urethra. Prostate cancer screening has been a widely debated topic over the last few years. National guidelines currently recommend that prostate cancer screening be performed for all males between 55-75 years of age via joint decision making between the patient and provider. As urologists, we unfortunately have to manage patients with prostate cancer, but in our practice we use the latest technologies to treat the cancer while minimizing side effects that would negatively impact the patient's quality of life. Urologists also treat sexual dysfunction. There are many websites and men's health clinics one can visit but people often forget that urologists are experts in treating erectile dysfunction. We recommend treatment per the American Urological Association guidelines and these therapies can consist of lifestyle modifications, oral medications and potentially even injection or implantable devices. One myth is that urologists only treat men. This is far from the truth. Women also suffer from urological conditions such as urinary incontinence, blood in the urine as well as kidney stones. Urologists spend a significant portion of training dedicated to treating specifically female conditions such as incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections. Our group is unique as we are able to promptly see new patients and perform initial, as well as follow-up visits, using telehealth. This has been a new mechanism of delivering care during the pandemic and we are continuing to perform telehealth visits. This has been very popular among patients that have difficulty with transportation and traveling. The St. Vincent Medical Group Urology practice consists of 4 fully board-certified urological surgeons, as well as a nurse practitioner, and we are currently welcoming new patients. We wish you the best of health in this upcoming season. Best, Chintan K. Patel, MD Saint Vincent Medical Group SPE C I A L SP ON S OR E D SE C T ION Your partner in health, for life.
