While the manufacturing workforce gained some ground after the Great Recession of 2008–09, even at its 10-year peak in 2019, the number of manufacturing jobs was substantially off from 2001. Legacy industries like paper mills are partly responsible for the decline in the overall manufacturing workforce, but increased mechanization and com- puterization has allowed many shops to increase productivity while reducing the workforce.
