Bangor Savings/Damariscotta B&T $35M deal gets final approval Nearly a year after Bangor Savings Bank announced plans to acquire Damariscotta Bank & Trust Co. for $35 million, the deal has received final approval from regulators. e Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. green- lighted the transaction earlier this month, following approval last month by the Federal Reserve. e Maine Bureau of Financial Institutions had previously given its OK, as had the boards of the bank holding companies and their subsidiaries. DART's Kimball inducted into Maine Tourism Hall of Fame Alvion Kimball, chair of DownEast Acadia Regional Tourism, is this year's inductee into the Maine Tourism Hall of Fame. e induction is usually held in April, at the MTA's annual meeting, but that was canceled so the award was presented at DART's annual symposium Nov. 19. Kimball, of Orland, has been chair of DART for six years, and a board member since 2003, as a representative of the East Penobscot Bay region. He was a leader in getting a state grant to celebrate the opening of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, served on the Governor's Tourism Council and as the representative to Maine Sea Grant. N O T E W O R T H Y M I D C O A S T & D O W N E A S T The Island Institute in Rockland was one of five organizations in the country that were each awarded $330,000 over three years for the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project, a partnership sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to provide resources and access to on-the-ground support for remote and islanded communities in the U.S. seeking to transform their energy sys- tems and lower their vulnerability to energy disruptions. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust pledged a $25,000 gift to support the town of Lubec's Safe Harbor Project. The money, which will be paid out over a three-year period, will be used to main- tain harbor upgrades in the town. UMaine, other organizations share specialty crop grant e University of Maine's agricultural program got a big bite of $500,000 awarded to Maine specialty crop growers and producers in a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Specialty Crop Block Grant pro- gram. e university's grants are: University of Maine's School of Biology and Ecology, $84,647 to improve wild blueberry produc- tion and resilience to warming and $79,994 to improve pest management practices in Maine wild blueberries; University of Maine's School of Food and Agriculture $52,402 to develop new peach varieties with improved cold hardiness; University of Maine's Maine Food and Agriculture Center $14,595 to expand Maine's winter squash storage life, $83,321 to conduct pest management on Maine potatoes and $30,872 to expand Maine's berry industry and improve farm profit- ability. Other recipients are Blue Barn LLC in Scarborough, $62,800; Daybreak Grower's Alliance, $38,216; Maine Maple Producers Association, $22,500; Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Alliance, $64,956; Maine Department of Agriculture, Conversation and Forestry GAP Program, $12,000.
