www.HartfordBusiness.com • November 9, 2020 • GIVING GUIDE • Hartford Business Journal 9 ABOUT US Year established: 1972 Total number of employees: 150 Annual revenues: $7,162,108 (most recent fiscal year, ending June 30, 2019) GEOGRAPHIC SERVICE AREA(S) State of Connecticut and Nationwide TOP FUNDING SOURCES Private Pay (tuition): 75% State Funded: 10% Private Donations: 13.95% Sale of Retail Goods Made by Our Adults: .75% Foundations: .3% GOALS With the onset of Covid-19, a priority for Chapel Haven Schleifer Center has been to fight social isolation and retain as much programming as possible. We have accomplished that in two main ways. Many Chapel Haven adults remain living on campus and in our adjacent neighborhood, and our staff are working hard to continue teaching and supporting these adults using appropriate safety protections. A new development has been the creation of Chapel Haven Online, our distance learning portal. For the first time, any adult with a social or developmental disability who may be home, isolated and with nothing productive to do, can join our classes at https://www.chapelhaven.org/chapel-haven- online/. Our goal in 2021 is to continue our award- winning curriculum (for adults with Down Syndrome, Autism, Asperger Syndrome, intellectual disabilities and more), while keeping the health and safety of our adults and staff at the forefront. FUNDRAISING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES Chapel Haven Schleifer Center raised a record $45 million prior to the onset of Covid-19 to implement a complete campus transformation. Working with the design/ build team S/L/A/M Collaborative, Chapel Haven has a beautiful, modern campus, including a REACH classroom and residential facility, courtyard, Welcome Center and the Schleifer Adult Independent Living (SAIL), designed for residents to age in place. However, the onset of the pandemic has disrupted traditional programming. We have sought assistance through the Payroll Protection Program, a Covid-19 fund administered by the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, and the Great Give, but we need more help. We invite donors who share our urgency to help us continue to fight social isolation for a vulnerable population. GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Since 2017, Chapel Haven's newest program, CareerAbility, has provided 90 adults with job skill development (career exploration, volunteering, internships, and employment). CareerAbility was founded to meet a vital element of Chapel Haven's mission: meaningful employment for its clients. To effectively address the need for meaningful employment, this division requires the business community's support with on-the-job training, as well as opportunities for hire. The business community can partner with CareerAbility to offer these prospects to its clients. For more information on how your business can make a critical difference in the lives of our adults, please contact Danielle Chiaraluce, Executive Director of CareerAbility, at dchiaraluce@chapelhaven.org. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Chapel Haven values the help of volunteers in many ways. Some of those include coaches and helpers for our Special Olympics program; volunteers to serve on our golf planning committee for our annual Chapel Haven Golf Tournament; the Chapel Haven Family Association for current parents who want to get involved in yearly events; our Best Buddies Chapter with students enrolled at Southern CT State University, Hopkins students who want to get involved during Senior Week or with our Book Buddies program; volunteers who want to help during our annual spring campus clean-up.
