IT ALL STARTED WITH A
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT...
Way back in the 1800s, a
Hartford High School senior
named Gertrude O. Lewis
wanted to help animals
of Connecticut.
She gathered support from
the community – including
some of Connecticut's
most prominent citizens
of the time – and that
same year, founded the
Connecticut Humane Society.
All these years later, the work
continues. Guided by core values of
Stewardship, Respect, Quality Care
and a Community-Focus, CHS is the
oldest and most comprehensive
animal welfare organization in the
state, serving more than 11,000
pets in need every year.
The pets rely solely on the
generosity and support of people like
you: friends, donors and volunteers.
