Even before the pandemic, online sales had long been ascending in popularity. From household items to clothing and groceries, online marketplaces had established themselves as go-to places for a variety of goods at increasingly accessible price points. But brick-and-mortar shops continue to thrive in some places such as remade downtowns, even as many area malls struggle to retain anchor stores, and they offer an immediacy, as well as human-to-human interaction, not widely available at most online retailers. When polled online, the plurality of WBJ readers said they prefer downtown or Main Street shopping.
