28 2020 Massachusetts Manufacturing Awards
L
ightspeed Manufacturing is
an electronic manufacturing
services (EMS) company
specializing in printed circuit board
assembly and repair, as well as
prototype manufacturing – always
with a focus on quality, efficiency,
and customer service. Their products
have been used in robotics, drones,
medical equipment, automotive and
aerospace technology.
When the COVID-19 pandemic
began, Lightspeed quickly pivoted
its operations to address the severe
shortage of personal protective
equipment (PPE) for health care
workers and first responders. They
partnered with MasksOn.org on an
innovative approach for producing
face masks – by retrofitting full-face
snorkel masks.
Each mask doubles as a respirator
and a face shield and can be used in
emergency situations when FDA-
cleared PPE is not available. To date,
Lightspeed has produced over 35,000
masks, which have been provided
free of charge to frontline workers
locally, nationally, and abroad –
including to the Haverhill Police
Department, Massachusetts General
Hospital, U.S. Naval hospital ships,
and thousands of other institutions.
Lightspeed's partnership with
MasksOn.org is representative not
only of their willingness to step up
to the plate in a time of need but
also of their continued efforts to
promote technological innovation and
entrepreneurship. Lightspeed has
partnered with MassChallenge to open
a makerspace where entrepreneurs
can design and test new products, in
addition to sponsoring the Haverhill
Hardware Innovation Challenge and
providing technical assistance and
manufacturing support for many
start-ups.
Despite their small size, Lightspeed
was named EMS Company of the
Year in 2013 by Circuits Assembly
Magazine for their forward-thinking
vision and consistent support of new
problem-solving technologies.
