20 2020 Massachusetts Manufacturing Awards F ounded in 1986 by three college friends, Mass. Bay Brewing Company, Inc. is a pioneer in the craft beer revolution and has become New England's largest craft brewer by volume (roughly 175,000 barrels). The company was issued MA Brewers Permit #01 because it was the first brewery to commercially brew beer after a 25-year period of industry dormancy in the Commonwealth. The company is headquartered in South Boston, MA with a 47,000 sq. ft. facility that accounts for 72% of annual production and welcomes over 285,000 visitors annually to its Boston brewery. The brewery produces a portfolio of five nationally-recognized brands that address all major industry segments, including craft beer, cider and seltzers: Harpoon, Arctic Summer, Clown Shoes, UFO, and City Roots. In 2014, the company became 49% employee-owned and has additional facilities in Woburn, MA and Windsor, VT. COVID-19 Response: Like many companies in the Commonwealth, Harpoon Brewery has been impacted by the pandemic. With bars and restaurants closed and an inventory of unsold draft beer, the company partnered with Deacon Giles, a local craft distiller, to convert the beer into hand-sanitizer that was donated to local charities and frontline workers. The company also released and distributed Harpoon For the Frontline Community Ale to help raise funds for the Boston Resiliency Fund and other programs to support COVID-19 relief efforts.
