The Waterville Boys Club was established in 1924, the YMCA in 1948, and in 1972 the Girls Club and Boys Club merged. When renovations were needed to both facilities, Harold Alfond proposed combining the two organizations under one roof to better serve the needs of the entire community. In May of 1999, the Alfond Youth Center was opened as the only merged club in the nation. On hand for the dedication were Senator George J. Mitchell and Secretary of State General Colin Powell. This collaboration, and future renovations, enhanced programs and facilities to now include the largest licensed accredited afterschool program in the state, therapy pool and 6-lane lap pool, triple gymnasium, climbing wall, karate dojo, dance studio, year round greenhouse growing dome, and Kids' Kitchen. This year's 10,000 square foot addition, the Peter G. Alfond Pathway to Wellness, added an indoor track, weight room, group fitness room, spin studio, Gronk Zone functional training center, teaching kitchen, health services, and new name, the Boys & Girls Clubs & YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth & Community Center. 250 75% 125 85,000 Free, Hot, Nutritious Meals & Snacks Served Annually Food Insecure and attend AYCC programs at no cost to families Weekend Meal Backpacks sent home weekly After School Program Youth Attend Daily 35, 000 evening meals served at 6 community locations over 11 weeks M-F, 12 hour/day childcare for essential health care workers Virtual programming to keep over 800 members connected Meals, blankets, and outreach delivered to over 400 senior members Mon—Fri full day care for out of school students due to pandemic schedules Over 40 individual volunteers serving over 1,400 service hours!
