While Acadia's share is still unknown, the national park has "a lot of deferred maintenance projects that are shovel ready," Acadia's superintendent, Kevin Schneider, told the Acadia Advisory Commission during its virtual meeting held Sept. 14. On Aug. 4, President Trump signed into law the Great American Outdoors Act, a conserva- tion bill that includes $9.5 billion over five years to help catch up on a $12 bil- lion maintenance backlog at national parks. With 86 miles of roads, 17 public water systems, 158 miles of hiking trails, 45 miles of carriage roads and four campgrounds, much of Acadia's deferred maintenance is below the sur- face, including things like culverts and wastewater systems. But the backlog includes everything from upgraded restrooms to a new visitor center. The project is a collaborative effort of Open Table MDI, College of the Atlantic, Healthy Acadia and the Bar Harbor Food Pantry to deliver fresh produce, dry goods and prepared foods to Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor, towns that project leaders say are underserved by current food-security efforts. 'American Loggers' stars seek help for industry Two Maine loggers-turned-TV-stars are onscreen again in an appeal to get federal emergency relief to the struggling timber cutting and hauling industry. Eldon Pelletier and Rudy Pelletier, whose Millinocket business was the subject of the former "American Loggers" reality series from 2009 to 2011, have released video statements calling on President Donald Trump and Congress to provide emergency financial relief. It's part of a campaign by the Professional Logging Contractors of Maine, an Augusta-based trade group, and the Carolina Loggers Association. e logging industry has seen a steep decline in demand for wood fiber since the start of the pandemic. A recent analysis by the American Loggers Council shows that this year's 6.7% decrease in raw wood material consump- tion has led to a $1.83 billion reduction in the value of wood delivered by loggers and timber haulers. Loggers and timber haulers have not been included in federal pandemic assistance.
