4 Worcester Business Journal | Book of Lists 2020 | wbjournal.com U p until February of this year, the national and local economies were on a steady upward trajectory. The last major disruption to the Central Massachusetts business community came with the Great Recession, which although it started in 2007, meant 2008 or 2009 was like- ly the last time a large number of companies had to deal with a significant shakeup. Then came the coronavirus pandemic. As the global economy was impacted at the start of the year, the U.S. economy started feeling the impact and officially went into a recession in February, according to the Cambridge-based National Bureau of Economic Research, which determines when economic cycles begin and end. By mid-March, the economic impact of COVID- 19 was in full force in Central Massachusetts, as businesses shut down in an effort to stem the spread of the pandemic, resulting in – among many other things – the state having its worst unem- ployment rate since records started being kept in 1976. While the local, state and national economies have slowly reopened over the summer, we are still in the middle of the pan- demic and its economic fallout, especially since a vaccine is still a ways off and the government bailout money previously propping up businesses and consumers is running dry. The video of the death of George Floyd in late May, another in the long line of unarmed Black people killed by police, led to the surge of another crisis in America and in Central Massachusetts, where all people are being forced to reconcile with the impact of power structures, institutional racism, and our national mindset. Local companies are starting to look at their diversity, equity and inclusion efforts – with a handful of organizations like UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester taking the lead – but meaningful change, on an issue plaguing this country since its found- ing, will take sustained effort over a number of years. WBJ's annual Book of Lists publication is meant to be a snapshot of the Central Massachusetts economy for that year, listing the major industries, businesses and players. In a year where so much is in flux, WBJ's 2020 Book of Lists edition captures this moment in time. New and expanded lists this year detail the more diverse companies in the region, those owned by women, people of color, veterans and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Another new list this year showcases the banks leading the efforts to get federal Paycheck Protection Program bailout funding to the small businesses suffering most in the COVID-19 fallout. With 50 lists this year, this publication is meant to help you and your organization better understand the regional business community and how you can thrive, even as so much uncertainty swirls around you. Change is a constant, and knowing your role in that evolving landscape will help you navigate the depths. - Brad Kane, editor C O N T E N T S 2020 is an inflection point BANKING & FINANCE ......................................... 9 Banks ............................................................. 10 Credit unions .................................................. 14 Mergers & acquisitions .................................... 16 SBA lenders .................................................... 17 SBA loan recipients ......................................... 18 PPP lenders* .................................................. 20 HEALTH CARE ................................................... 23 Hospitals ....................................................... 24 Health insurers................................................ 26 Physician groups ............................................. 28 Addiction treatment centers ............................. 29 EDUCATION ....................................................... 33 Colleges & universities .................................... 34 Vo-tech high schools ....................................... 36 Private high schools* ....................................... 37 Private primary schools* .................................. 38 REAL ESTATE .................................................... 41 Commercial leases .......................................... 42 Commercial sales ........................................... 43 Commercial real estate brokers* ...................... 44 Worcester's top property taxpayers .................. 45 Commercial contractors .................................. 46 Residential real estate firms* ........................... 48 Architectural firms ........................................... 49 MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY .................. 51 Biomedical companies .................................... 52 Manufacturers ................................................ 56 Marijuana businesses ...................................... 60 Breweries ....................................................... 62 TOURISM & HOSPITALITY ................................ 65 Golf courses ................................................... 66 Hotels ............................................................. 68 Meeting facilities ............................................. 70 Tourist attractions ........................................... 75 Caterers ......................................................... 76 Entertainment & sporting venues ..................... 77 PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ............................... 79 Insurance agencies ......................................... 80 Law firms ....................................................... 82 Accounting firms ............................................. 84 Advertising & marketing communications firms .. 86 Commercial cleaners....................................... 89 IT service providers ......................................... 90 GENERAL INTEREST ......................................... 93 Woman-owned businesses .............................. 94 Minority-owned businesses ............................. 98 Veteran-owned businesses* .......................... 100 LGBTQ-owned businesses* ........................... 101 Labor unions* ............................................... 102 Highest-paid CEOs ........................................ 103 Highest-paid nonprofit chief executives .......... 104 Highest-paid state employees ........................ 106 Incubators .................................................... 107 Co-working places and makerspaces ............. 108 Human services nonprofits ............................ 109 Chambers of commerce ................................ 110 Private foundations ....................................... 112 See digital version for longer lists. * debut list INDEXED BY INDUSTRY CATEGORY Worcester Business Journal (ISSN#1063-6595) is published bi- weekly, 24x per year, including 4 special issues in May, September, October, and December by New England Business Media. 172 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, MA 01604.
