BJ's 40 Under Forty
awards are about
bringing people
together.
Yes, each of the
individual winners is accomplished
in his or her own right, and those
achievements are what we honor them for
every year. But as the editor of the WBJ
for the last five 40 Under Forty awards,
the true magic for me is watching this
rising generation of business leaders
come together to form and strengthen
relationships – sometimes lasting
years – as they collectively go through
a late spring and summer of taking part
in group photo shoots, including at a
winners-only cocktail reception, and then
coming back together to be highlighted
in front of 500 or so people at the awards
ceremony.
Of course, because of the coronavirus
pandemic, none of that is happening
this year. So, in order to recreate some
of that magic for this edition, we had
to get creative. In order to create a
sense of togetherness while keeping the
winners separated, we formed them
into photo teams reflective of the Story
of 2020 (mask-wearing, Zoom calls,
having children and pets be part of their
professional lives, etc.), had them plan
how they wanted their group photos to
look, and then shot almost all of those
photos individually in front of a white
screen, so we could rebuild those group
photos in the layout when we put this
issue together.
One of WBJ's key partners in all of
this was e Worcester Club. e club
developed a safe screening, tracing, dis-
tancing, and cleaning policy for two days
in July so photographer Matt Wright and
I could schedule efficient and separated
photo shoots, where we never had more
than seven people in the room at once.
It all went incredibly smoothly, and e
Worcester Club has my eternal gratitude.
WBJ has had numerous memorable
editions during my tenure as editor, most
of which are centered around our hard-
nosed journalism. But the 40 Under Forty
issue remains my favorite of our regular
annual editions, for both its creativity
and the way all these young business
professionals come together. is 2020

edition required more detailed advanced
planning than any other 40 Under Forty
issue, but I am extremely pleased with how
it came together.
