S O U R C E : Each brewer via survey and Maine Brewers Association Maine has over 150 breweries, including many rural craft brewers. The world's first total alcohol abstinence organization was founded in Portland in 1815, and by 1851 was able to get enough support to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol in Maine. It was repealed in 1856 200 200 IDEAS FOR MAINE'S BICENTENNIAL Deacon George Thomas launched the clipper ship Red Jacket from his Rockland shipyard in 1853. No large sailing vessel matched its speed for crossing the Atlantic. The schooner Bowdoin was conceived by Arctic explorer Donald MacMillan in 1917. He hired designer William H. Hand of New Bedford, Mass., and builder Hodgdon Brothers of East Boothbay. In 1921, the Bowdoin, named after MacMillan's alma mater, was launched. The cribstone bridge between Bailey and Orr's islands, in Harpswell, is on the National Register of Historic Places and listed as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The 1,150-foot-long bridge was completed in 1928, built with Yarmouth granite slabs, using no mortar or cement, allowing the tide to flow through the openings.
