Peary (1856–1920) grew up in Portland, graduated from Bowdoin College and summered on Eagle Island off Harp- swell. He made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is best known for claim- ing to have reached the geographic North Pole in 1909. Maine's boatbuilding schools include WoodenBoat School, the Landing School, the Apprenticeshop and the Carpenter's Boatshop.
