Bill Sherman established W.H. Sherman Printer & Stationer in Bar Harbor in 1886. It later became Sherman's Bookstore and eventually expanded elsewhere. Rupert "Rupe" G. Johnson (1902–74), a Standish teacher and coach, started making baseball bats as a hobby at his Brownfield home in 1927, attracting attention from major leaguers. R.G. Johnson Co., now located in Denmark, Maine, is born. Belfast's poultry, sardine, and potato companies dominated the waterfront in the 1950s, earning the nickname Broiler Capital of the World. The Broiler Day festival in July featured barbeque chicken.
