X V J U LY 1 3 , 2 0 2 0 6 Maine businesses received $2B in PPP funds A total of 27,198 Maine businesses have received more than $2 billion altogether in emergency relief loans through the federal Paycheck Protection Program. e U.S. Small Business Administration disclosed specific information about individual PPP loans for the first time since the program launched April 3. To date, the SBA has administered 4.9 million loans nationwide, totaling $521.2 billion and issued through 5,460 lenders. e program was created under the federal CARES Act. In Maine, 19 businesses received loans between $5 million and $10 million, the highest loan range broken out in the data. Proceeds allowed the companies to retain a total of roughly 6,500 jobs. In other CARES Act funding, Maine farmers have been awarded a total of $7.75 million to date through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program; the Casco Bay Island Transit District was awarded $2.7 million to support operating, administrative and preven- tive maintenance costs. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services was awarded a total of $3 million to help provide free immuni- zations to eligible low-income children throughout the state of Maine. through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Immunization and Vaccines for Children Program. The department also received $974,168 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Smoking and Health to combat tobacco use among Maine youth throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm to School program awarded $100,000 to the Cumberland County Food Security Council, $97,391 to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and $48,415 to the Maine School Administrative District 30 to support child nutrition programs for the upcom- ing school year. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden announced that that Maine Farmers Exchange, a Presque Isle distribution company, was awarded $2.1 million and Native Maine Produce & Specialty Foods, a Westbrook distribution company, was awarded $1.35 million to participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farmers to Families Food Box Program. The Hartford Business Journal won gold medals for Best Recurring Feature, "Executive Profiles," by Sean Teehan; and "Broken System: Hartford's exorbitant commercial property tax curbs economic growth," by Editor Greg Bordonaro, News Editor Matt Pilon and Staff Writer Sean Teehan. It also won a silver medal for Best Local Coverage of a National Business/ Economic Story for "With their costs under fire, long-term care hospitals push back, pivot," by News Editor Matt Pilon.
