While each of us has been affected, the pandemic underscores the health and economic disparities of lower- wage earners and people of color; the vulnerability of those already hungry, homeless or developmentally compromised; the elderly; and, those experiencing domestic violence. United Way brings people, resources and organizations together to address immediate needs and find long-term solutions to community challenges. We're built for tackling the immediate and long-term effects of COVID-19. It's in our DNA, and that of our donors; volunteers; community-based organizations; and, corporate, school, government and phil- anthropic partners. Here's a snapshot of what we're doing thanks to your support: Respond • United Way 2-1-1, Connecticut's information and referral service has had a 200% increase in calls, fielding ques- tions about COVID-19, financial help, counseling, food and housing assistance. • Neighbors in Need, our disaster response fund, is meeting growing needs of residents for food and emergency assis- tance through front-line community-based organizations. • Connecticut United Ways COVID-19 Response Fund is providing direct financial aid to those who have lost their jobs by partnering with town social services. • We've launched public education campaigns to reduce the virus' spread and provide financial coaching. Recover • We're working with municipalities and regional partners on recovery plans for employment, economic develop- ment, health, and human services. Reimagine • We developed virtual volunteer opportunities to support distance learning, reduce social isolation, and recognize essential workers. We're innovating employee engage- ment and workplace giving campaigns to connect people with causes they care about and ensure nonprofit organi- zations have the resources needed to provide health and human services to local residents. Uniting together, we will successfully fight COVID-19 and accelerate innovative ways to give, advocate and volunteer for the common good. Let's not settle for today's 'new normal'. Join us in creating a 'better normal'. Sincerely, Paula S. Gilberto President and CEO United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut For more information on how to get involved in your community, contact your local United Way. t
