www.HartfordBusiness.com • April 20, 2020 • Hartford Business Journal 25 2020 POWER 50 Power and leadership in times of crisis C ompanies and organizations are in need of smart, competent leaders more than ever. As the coronavirus pandemic up- ends the economy and changes the way compa- nies, governments, colleges and nonprofits do business — likely forever — organizations need strong leaders who can guide them through an ever-changing landscape. Amid so much uncertainty, now seemed like as good a time as any for Hartford Business Journal to publish its first Power 50 list, which identifies business and civic leaders whose influence has a significant impact on the Greater Hartford economy and community. This isn't an awards section. HBJ's inaugural Power 50 class was chosen and ranked by HBJ's news team. To make the list, professionals must not only be in a position of power, they need to wield it in such a way to have an outsized impact on our community. Power comes in a variety of forms. You can be a CEO, government leader, college president, run a nonprofit, regulate an industry or be an important cog in a highly visible project or trend. In each pro- file, HBJ's news team explains who the individuals are and why they were chosen for the list. The rankings include a mix of established players as well as some fresh faces to our region. Admittedly, this special section has been planned for nearly a year, but the recent COVID-19 outbreak forced us to rethink some of our picks, profiles and rankings. You'll notice some government and healthcare leaders ranked high on the list as they have been on the front lines responding to the pan- demic. You'll also notice that there are more than 50 people highlighted as we've paired up several picks and identified some power couples. As this is our first time doing this special is- sue, we're curious to know what you think. Feel free to send feedback. Power 50 will be back next year with some new names and fresh faces, so be prepared to make suggestions.
