aine's number of housing build-
ing permits issued hit a post-
recession high last year. And through
February of this year, the latest month
available from the U.S. Census, Maine
was on pace to have another strong
year. Among New England states,
Maine ranked No. 2 in building per-
mits issued for housing in February,
behind Massachusetts. The lion's
share of permits issued in Maine were
for single-family homes. But that was
all before the COVID-19 crisis. It's too
early to tell what kind of impact the
economic shutdown will have on new
home construction, but we may see
that 2019 was the peak of this most
recent building boom.
