CIEE, citing impact of COVID-19, eliminates 248 jobs in Maine e Council on International Educational Exchange said March 26 that it will end 248 jobs in Portland, part of a wider, global shutdown of its programming. CIEE, a non- profit founded after World War II that sends 15,000 Americans abroad to study, intern and teach, said it also eliminated 107 other U.S. jobs and 300 internationally. It oper- ates 63 sites in 42 countries. It cited the "global spread of COVID-19, [which] has literally brought the world to a halt." e nonprofit is headquartered at 300 Fore St. in the Old Port neighborhood. Leslie Taylor, communications manager for the nonprofit, told Mainebiz in an email that the nonprofit is "hope- ful that when we are able to resume operating our programs we will be able to begin rehiring and increasing staffing levels." Portland startup raises $875K HighByte Inc., a Portland startup creating industrial operations software, has received $875,000 in pre-seed financing to support the company's continued prod- uct development work. HighByte received $625,000 in convert- ible debt from independent angel investors and venture capital firms including the Maine Venture Fund and Switzerland-based Momenta Ventures. e company also received a $250,000 long-term, low-interest loan from the Maine Technology Institute. e pre-seed financing will fund the next round of product development as well as research hir- ing, according to the news release. Angel investors include Corson Ellis, founder and former chairman of another Portland software devel- oper, Kepware, and Brett Austin, the previous president of Kepware.
