A division of: Advertising: Ronni Rabin phone: 203-937-2148 ( x707) rrabin@newhavenbiz.com New Haven BIZ is a publication of New England Business Media, LLC. L ast spring, in our first full year of publishing New Haven BIZ, we created a special issue we called the "New Haven Power 50." We knew the name might be a cause for confusion: Like, why would a business magazine pub- lish an article about weightliers? No, not that kind of power. What kind, then? e highest-paid busi- ness people in southern Connecti- cut? at would have yielded some zillionaires from Fairfield County, like...Ned Lamont! No logical place for him in a "New Haven Power 50." How about people whose influence can't be measured by mere dollars? Someone like Peter Salovey, president of Yale, an insti- tution whose influence spans the globe? All the world is his stage — he's more in New Haven than of New Haven. We didn't include him, either. Instead, the "Power 50" was a compendium of business and community leaders — some well known, others still emerging — who we thought our readers ought to know, if they didn't already. (Af- ter you read the issue, of course, then you did.) e New Haven Power 50 was quite a hit with readers (and not just the grandmothers of the profilees, either). So we decided to do it again. Who to include the second time around? If last year's inaugural "Power 50" was the 50 "most powerful" people in New Haven, does that mean this year we'd go for Nos. 51 through 100? Far from it. New Haven has become such a fertile and dynamic business arena that new ideas, new enterprises and yes, new leaders are forever bursting onto the stage. Whose power is it, anyway? ey're doing new things in new ways that deserve, even demand, our attention. is is that attention. It is notable that we divided our 50 designees into six broad categories: Corporate/Finance/ Real Estate, Entrepreneurs, Health Care/Technology, Higher Education/Non-Profit, Professions and Public Sector. While these industry divisions are somewhat arbitrary and subjective, the high number of professionals in the health care and non-profit sectors reflects the Elm City's evolving industry mix. e list would be far different in Hartford or Stamford or Bridgeport. Beginning on page 17, you can get advice from the Power 50, find out their secrets to success, and maybe learn a thing or two about how to be more successful in your own business. We know we did. And that's why we think this new cohort, the New Haven Power 50 Class of 2020, is pretty special. We're already setting our sights on the Class of 2021. n — Michael C.
