As part of an agreement with Stanley, HCL will deploy 1,000 people globally, including in Hartford, to support Stanley's IT operations, HCL said, including running the New Britain-based toolmaker's servers and other technology infrastructure. Stanley will still maintain an in- house IT department, though some of its employees will move to HCL and there will be a small number of layoffs, a Stanley official said. UTC unveils $40M engine compressor facility United Technologies Corp. has unveiled a $40-million engine compressor facility at its East Hartford research center that will ease UTC subsidiary Pratt & Whitney's efforts to design engines. Using the facility, UTC R&D workers can test air compression, which is crucial to engine performance, officials said. The facility, comprised of about 450,000 pounds of concrete and tens of thousands of pounds of steel reinforcement bars, enables R&D engineers to test durability and efficiency of the engines they design. Portland pot grower buys Rocky Hill facility ahead of relocation Portland's Connecticut Pharmaceutical Solutions Inc. (CTPharma), one of the state's four licensed medical marijuana growers, has confirmed its plans to relocate operations to Rocky Hill. Hartford Business Journal first reported last September that CTPharma scored a special permit from Rocky Hill's planning and zoning commission to move into a larger, 216,500-square- foot building vacated by pharmaceutical giant McKesson Corp. CTPharma said it completed its purchase of the Rocky Hill building at 280 Dividend Road for an undisclosed sum. FedEx to close Windsor distribution center FedEx Ground is planning to close its ground transportation facility in Windsor by mid-April, and will redirect 133 employees there to other nearby distribution facilities, it said. The company said it intends to close the building at 759 Rainbow Road on or around April 18. FedEx doesn't plan any layoffs associated with the closure. Current employees will have a chance to work at other nearby FedEx Ground locations. CT solar jobs hold steady as U.S. industry stems losses The number of solar energy-related jobs in Connecticut was stable last year, as the industry experienced a nationwide rebound in employment, following two years of declines, according to the 10th annual National Solar Jobs Census from the Solar Foundation. Connecticut had 2,234 solar jobs in 2019, an increase of 41 jobs, or 1.9 percent, from the year prior, according to the survey. The U.S. solar industry had nearly 250,000 workers last year, an increase of 2.3 percent. The U.S. job count declined in the prior two annual surveys, for 2017 and 2018. Connecticut's solar job activity was mostly flat during that time. Hartford's Joseph Merritt & Co. acquires Cromwell printing company Hartford printing and graphics provider Joseph Merritt & Co. says it's acquired Cromwell-based Northeast Printing Network. The move will expand the scope of services Joseph Merritt and Northeast Printing can bring to their customers, Joseph Merritt said. Joseph Merritt didn't disclose financial terms of the acquisition. As part of the deal, New England Printing will move its operation to Joseph Merritt's headquarters in Hartford.
