We design course content with input from state employers to ensure that the skills we teach will prepare our graduates to become sought-after employees. Goodwin's trajectory from small-business technology training center to accredited, non-profit college offering associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees has become the stuff of regional legend. Individuals who remember the blighted oil storage tanks and contaminated brownfields that once isolated East Hartford's Riverside Drive and surrounding neighborhoods now marvel at the vibrant buildings and remediated riverfront campus that reconnect local communities to the Connecticut River. In the mid-2000s, Goodwin earned significant recognition for our nursing program, established in response to a statewide workforce shortage. Since then, the college has become a leading contributor to strengthening the healthcare workforce of Connecticut. In a similar initiative in 2015, Goodwin collaborated with state manufacturers to design programs that encourage young people to consider careers in manufacturing and help incumbent workers hone their skills and advance in their positions. These programs have been recognized nationally as models of partnership between education and industry. In addition to nursing and manufacturing, Goodwin offers programs in business, general studies, health and natural sciences, and social and educational sciences. Whether enhancing our existing courses of study or creating an entirely new program to address an identified gap in Connecticut employment, we take great pride in our community-based, holistic approach to education. The past 20 years have taught us that to serve students effectively, we must be flexible and forward thinking. Many of our students work full time or have family commitments. Some are the first in their families to pursue a college education. We never forget that our students have pride, and we provide services without stigmatizing need. And our campus welcomes learners of all ages. Students in our sustainability-themed magnet high school learn how modern manufacturing methods are addressing environmental stewardship. Thanks to our Early College programming, these students will graduate high school having earned up to 30 tuition-free college credits — their freshman year essentially completed at no cost to their families. Now, with our recently launched Early College Advanced Manufacturing Pathway (ECAMP™), we are reaching out to educational districts throughout the state to design one-of-a-kind manufacturing education models that will provide training and support to students. Not only has Goodwin stepped up as a driving force in career readiness, we are making our mark as thought leaders on the educational forefront as well. We have embraced Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as our signature style of teaching and trained our instructors in methods that address the unique needs of each learner. For the past two years, educators from throughout North America have come to East Hartford to participate in our UDL conferences, sharing insights designed to facilitate learning, both in the classroom and online. Our commitment to further educational leadership inspired us to create the Goodwin Institute for Learning Innovation, providing professional learning, conducting research and disseminating information across a variety of settings. As we continue to celebrate Goodwin's 20th anniversary into 2020, we are preparing to announce many inspiring and surprising initiatives. From moving forward as an innovator in education, to helping revitalize East Hartford through our exciting campus master plan, to creating new advanced-degree programs, we look forward to where the next 20 years will take our mission to build bridges between education, commerce and community.
