Hartford Hospital breaks ground on $70M expansion Hartford Hospital broke ground Nov. 21 on a $70-million expansion of its sprawling South Green neighborhood campus. The project centers around construction of a 49,550-square-foot addition to the north façade of its existing Bliss Building at 80 Seymour St., which will provide four floors of additional space to support clinical areas including MRIs, interventional radiology, electrophysiology, a cath lab, and critical and surgical care, the hospital said. The new building, which is scheduled to open by Aug. 2021, will be located on the grassy area outside the hospital's cafeteria, adjacent to the Cheney and Crane buildings. Its layout will make for an easier and more seamless patient experience, the hospital said, with separate areas for inpatient and outpatient care. $20M mixed-use development eyed in Hartford's North End A Hartford businessman is leading an effort to redevelop a key corner in the city's North End with new residential, office and retail space. 7 Summits Realty CEO Rohan Freeman said he is looking to secure public and private funding to build a four-story mixed-use development on vacant city-owned land at the corner of Albany Avenue and Woodland Street. The $20-million proposal includes 50 apartment units and retail/office space. Freeman, who also owns a Hartford engineering firm, has committed $1.5 million to the project, and is seeking the remaining $19.5 million from several potential funders. The Hartford Redevelopment Agency awarded the project to 7 Summits this summer, but Freeman has been looking to revitalize the corner of Albany Avenue and Woodland Street for years. Office, retail development proposed near South Windsor's Evergreen Walk A Farmington developer-landlord is looking to build a mixed-use retail and office development on unused land across from the Evergreen Walk shopping center in South Windsor. Geoffrey Sager, of Metro Realty, filed an application with the town to build the development with approximately 36,700 square feet of retail space and 85,700 square feet of office space on land currently listed at 190 Buckland Road. If approved, plans show the buildings would be part of the newly minted Gateway Boulevard development with a new address of 200 Gateway Boulevard. Food market to debut in downtown Hartford A new food market is opening in downtown Hartford's Stark Building. The so-called Hartford Food Market will debut Nov. 25 in a 6,650-square-foot space on the ground level of the 750 Main St. office tower, co-owner Abdulla Nasher said. New York office-space landlord Adam J. Stark earlier this year announced the food market would open in the street-level space that was once a CVS pharmacy store. The market will join The Greenway Market and New York Market & Deli, both on Asylum Street, purveying fresh and packaged goods to downtown residents and workers. Nasher and his two business partners, which operate four food markets in Harlem, Brooklyn and Bronx, N.Y., noticed the vacant retail space during a trip last fall to downtown Hartford and began to envision a store there. The partners eventually leased the space and spent more than $500,000 in recent months to overhaul the storefront. The food market, open seven days a week, will initially employ up to 15 full- and part-time workers, he said. The store will sell fresh produce and includes a juice bar and prepared food stations for pizza and deli sandwiches.
