L arry M. Shaw is the President and CEO of MMG Insurance. MMG, headquartered in Presque Isle, Maine, is an AM Best "A" Excellent rated regional property and casualty insurance company with operations in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Virginia. He has been with the Company since 1982. Prior to being promoted to President and CEO in 1995, he served in various capacities, including Chief Operations Officer, Vice President, and Secretary. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maine and a Master of Science Degree from Husson College. He has also attended the Executive Education Program at Harvard Business School and at Wharton School of Business. He holds the CPCU and AU designations. He is a recipient of the Maine CPCU's Lee Allen President's Award for Excellence. He was inducted into the Junior Achievement Maine Business Hall of Fame in 2015. He is a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Shaw was recently presented with an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from Husson University. The most impactful learning is following (and during) failure: Although this education is never free, it has a great return on investment. 2. People do business with people: Embrace technology, however, those that work on their people skills as well, bring enhanced value. 3. Environments matter: There are those environments that bring out the best in us — and those not so much. 4. Direct conversation builds understanding: It is your responsibility to have your message understood. 5. Who you put on the field matters: Individuals with aligned skills to the need will perform considerably better. 6. Culture needs to be invested in, protected and committed to: A factor in all decisions, you can't fake culture — you live it. 7. Continuous improvement is everybody's business: Everyone has ideas to improve — can the business react is extremely important. 8. Relationship building is for the tough times, not for when things are running great: Working through the difficult scenarios TOGETHER makes for better decisions. 9. When adversity comes to call, the best leaders see this moment as a new beginning: A leader must lead from this position. 10. Situational leadership needs more overt acknowledgement, intuition and experience rise to the forefront: Many situations will not line up with something covered in a published step-by-step business manual.
