'Crisis' in affordable housing Bar Harbor Town Council is look- ing at ways to address what some councilors are calling an affordable housing crisis. At a recent coun- cil's meeting, Council member Gary Friedmann presented a framework of six potential discussion points. ey included stopping new permits for non-hosted, short-term vacation rentals. "We know that local families rely on Airbnb-type revenue to be able to afford to live here," he wrote. "But town investors have discovered that they can buy up multiple dwell- ings in almost every zone to rent by the night. Let's put an end to this neighborhood-busting practice before the 2020 season begins." Suggestions also included re-opening a discus- sion to draft a rooming-house ordi- nance to encourage on-site and safe, appropriately located employee room- ing houses and dormitories; working with Jackson Laboratory to plan for appropriately dense housing adjacent to its Bar Harbor campus that fits with the character of the community and contributes to the tax base; and amending the land-use ordinance to allow more dwelling units, including short-term vacation rentals, in zones served by town water and sewer. Recent funding changes put the pro- gram in jeopardy. Redzone Wireless LLC, a broadband company in Rockland, completed con- struction and activated fixed wireless broadband sites in Windham and New Sharon. The sites will serve 4,000 new business and residential locations Friends of Acadia in Bar Harbor raised $300,000 to maintain and preserve 17 historic carriage road bridges in Acadia National Park at its annual benefit. Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth announced that the Sally Stetson Tongren Scholarship Fund for Aroostook County awarded a total of $70,000 to graduating seniors of high schools in Aroostook County who are pursuing post-secondary education. L.L.Bean and Husson team up A new initiative by L.L.Bean Inc. and Husson University is designed to make it easier for employees to balance full-time work and their own professional education. e program will bring professors from the Bangor college to Bean's corporate headquarters in Freeport to make it more convenient for employees to pursue a master's degree in business administration. e program begins in September. ere was significant interest from Bean employees in the program, according to the release. So much, in fact, that the company had to use a lottery system to determine who would be able to participate in the first enrolled group of 22 students. Changing Seasons Federal Credit Union in Hampden announced an expansion that effectively doubles its own geographic footprint. The credit union previously served members within a 25-mile radius of Bangor. With the expansion, it can now serve mem- bers in all of Penobscot County and into Waldo County as well. Bangor Savings Bank Foundation awarded $49,500 in grants to 19 nonprofit organizations in Maine and New Hampshire.
