Chris Murphy has touted his annual walk across Connecticut, a week-long 100-mile walk across the state during which he talks to constituents. Murphy says the people, who talk about jobs and economic insecurity, are often the ones who inform his policy positions and initia- tives. A stated supporter of Connecticut's manufacturing industry, Murphy has taken steps to learn about and de- fend the industry's priorities in Washington, D.C., he said. Going forward, Murphy says he will focus on bolstering the industry while sup- porting a public option for health insurance. You created the Murphy's Manufacturing and Aerospace in Connecticut Council. What is it? The Manufacturing and Aerospace Council is com- prised of Connecticut business leaders, advocates and thought leaders who get together regularly to hear from guest speakers, learn from each other and advocate on behalf of the state's business commu- nity. This provides the foundation from which I fight for Connecticut's defense and manufacturing priori- ties in Washington through legislation. What issue do you consider to be your top prior- ity over the next year? Protecting the 522,000 people in Connecti- cut and over 130 million Americans living with pre-existing health conditions is a top priority of mine. Right now, a group of Republican states and the Trump administration are suing the federal government claiming that the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. If they succeed, hundreds of thousands of families in Connecticut will lose healthcare coverage and it's up to us in Congress to figure out how to stop that from happening. How would the Choose Medicare Act affect the insurance industry in Hartford? I know how important the insurance industry is to Connecticut. My bill would simply give consum- ers and employers the option to choose between private insurance and Medicare. Every American family and business should have the chance to choose Medicare if it's the right product for them. If private insurers are right about their product being better than Medicare, then they have noth- ing to worry about. But the federal government shouldn't stop anyone from choosing Medicare if they think it's the best insurance for them. "With the right partner, dreams become a reality."
